Today, Kanye west is one of the most widely known public figures in the world. Everybody knows of his antics and publicity stunts. However, because of these things, he is often overlooked as a truly talented performing artist. Kanye West's College dropout CD is one of my favorite albums of all time. The first time I heard this record, it blew my mind. The first single, "Through The Wire", tells the story of his near-death car crash that he experienced just months before the album's release. Like many of his other songs, this one that utilizes a sample from an older record. He samples Chaka Khan's "Through The Fire" in this particular case. What amazes me is that he recorded the track when his jaw was still wired shut, just weeks after his accident.
The beats on College Dropout are amazing. They hit hard, they make you bounce, and they are all very soulful with great vocals. Some of the guest appearances on the album include Jay Z, Mos Def, Ludacris, Common, Talib Kweli and Freeway. However, Kanye is definitely the star of the show. He has an ear for what works and his lyrics and rhymes are on point.
For a debut album, it will definitely land in some of the top lists for the 2000s best albums. Each song is an extension of Kanye's personality, and you can see how he is both cocky and self-deprecating at the same time. Each song ranges in topic from a tribute to his family, God, consumerism, his own materialism and fame, social critique, the hardships through life, the work world and more.
Kanye does come off as arrogant and materialistic at times, but you cannot deny his talent. He uses samples and beats that are truly innovative in the hip-hop industry. On this album he samples Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross, Lauryn Hill and Chaka Khan. Whether he is bragging, joking, or self criticizing, he has put together a great collection of tracks that will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the great hip-hop albums of all time.

Joshua Belden is a minimalist who is interested in reducing his expenses and stress. He lives in an RV and can often be found perusing the NADA RV Blue Book. He also is a big fan of upgrading his only mode of transportation, which is also his home. Most recently he dove into researching RV mattresses and the usefulness of foam vs. latex. He has been on road trips lasting months at a time and continues to enjoy it more and more.
